The 2007 Employer of the year is the Clarenville Area Co-operative. Mr. Kevin Jacobs, manager of the Co-op., accepted the Employer of the Year Award at a Luncheon at the Clarenville where AEC hosted their employers, sponsors, and job coaches. Mr. Jacobs told us about the work that Bert Keats does at the supermarket and of the great relationships he has formed with his colleagues and customers. The Co-op is proud of the abilities and attitude that Bert brings to his work day. Bert began working at the Co-op using a wage subsidy program. For the past six years he has worked completely independently.

The Ability Employment Corporation ran a 24 week Skills Link development program at the AEC office in Clarenville during September 2007 – February 2008. Eight young people participated and had an opportunity to learn new skills, spent 2 days per week in a job placement, explored their interests, and discussed their career plans. They were offered over a dozen workshops including First AID, WHIMIS, Customer Services, Conflict Resolution, Money Basics, etc. Three participants are now working, three are returning to do further educational updates, and others are working with AEC counsellors to move their career plans forward.

The AEC Learning Centre will open in May 2008 for a full program of events and projects. All clients, their families and care workers, and the general public are welcome to attend these events and sessions.

Ability Employment is partnering with the New Curtain Theatre to write, develop and perform a theatrical piece that will showcase AEC clients performing with professional actors. This production is part of AEC’s Learning Centre programs and demonstrates the importance of inclusion of those with disability in every aspect of community life. Production will be publicly staged in June/July 2008.

Each year the Ability Employment Corporation honors one of the employers who support our clients through offering a job placement at their business. The AEC Board in consultation with AEC staff, identify an outstanding business person or organization that helps us further the aims of AEC by employing a client. AEC will host a day-long Forum Terra Nova Resort Lodge, Port Blandford on 22nd. July, 2008. This event will bring together service providers for persons with Development Disability to discuss ways of offering service that is appropriate and seamless. We are delighted that Minister Shawn Skinner will do the Keynote Address at Lunch.

This event will also include the presentation of the Employer of the Year 2008 Award at lunch.
